Attorney & Mediator

Cheryl Watson Smith, Esq. has been in the private practice of law in Roanoke, Virginia since 1988. Ms. Smith is a 1983 graduate from the University of Virginia and a 1988 graduate from the University of Richmond, T.C. Williams School of Law where she was a member of the University of Richmond Law Review and Co-Chair of the Client Counseling and Negotiation Board.

Ms. Smith trained in 2004 as a Collaborative Family Law attorney and in 2008 completed the Collaborative Divorce Team Training. She is a Collaborative Process trainer with the Collaborative Practice Training Institute (CPTI). Since 2009, Ms. Smith has been named, by her peers, as a Collaborative Lawyer in the Virginia Super Lawyers Magazine. Ms. Smith is a founding member of the Virginia Collaborative Professionals (VaCP) and the Collaborative Divorce Professionals of Roanoke (CDPR), and is a member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals (IACP).

Ms. Smith is a Mediator certified by the Supreme Court of Virginia since 1995 and accepts mediation cases by private and court referral. Ms. Smith served as a volunteer mediator at the Conflict Resolution Center.

Ms. Smith is a Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) and serves on the Virginia Collaborative Professionals Council and the Collaborative Divorce Professionals of Roanoke Board. She previously served on the Virginia State Bar Family Law Section Board of Governors, the Virginia Bar Association Domestic Relations Section Council and the Virginia Bar Association Young Lawyers Section Executive Committee and Council. Ms. Smith is a past president of the Roanoke Valley Family Law Attorneys Association. She served as a member of the Virginia State Bar Special Committee on Resolution of Fee Disputes.

Community Involvement

Ms. Smith participates online at First Baptist Atlanta. She served on the local Special Education Advisory Council for Roanoke County. Ms. Smith volunteered at the Conflict Resolution Center, now knownas The Bridge Institute.She previously served on the Mental Health America of Roanoke Valley’s board, and served as a member of the Local Human Rights Committee of Catawba Hospital. Ms. Smith is a trustee of the Haymakertown Cemetery. Ms. Smith supports local and global missions, her local rescue and fire, St. Francis Service Dogs, Healing Strides of VA, Challenger Little League Baseball (District 12), and Salem Young Life: Capernaum Club.
